Hydroquinone is used by dermatologists to lighten hyperpigmentation. Hydroquinone works by slowing the production of melanin within the skin. Melanin is the pigment that gives color to human skin and hair. When applied topically, Hydroquinone reduces the appearance of discoloration to create a more even skin tone by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase — the enzyme that produces melanin.

Hydroquinone is not an overnight fix. Sun exposure is one of the main culprits in the aging process and is cumulative. It takes 4-8 weeks of consistent treatment as directed by your physician to see a difference. Your skin will improve as long as you follow your treatment plan. In order to get maximum results, adhere to sun avoidance and religiously use a broad spectrum sunscreen.

No, active percentages of cosmetics do not compound or add together. If you apply an SPF 15 moisturizer, an SPF 30 sunscreen and SPF 20 foundation, the highest SPF strength is SPF 30. The highest SPF applied would be your overall protection from the sun.

LESS IS MORE. Overuse of skincare products won’t provide a “quick fix,” and may likely  cause adverse skin reactions. One or two pumps of your favorite serum is more than enough to cover your face, decollate, and neck. LaserAway Beauty skincare formulas are concentrated, and when used as directed, provide optimal results. If using LaserAway Beauty Rx products, see recommended usage and directions on your approved prescription. Our doctors will evaluate your medical condition to determine the recommended treatment plan for your skin condition. Any questions you may have regarding treatment or changes to your medical history should be evaluated by your doctor by logging into your account.

Hydroquinone is used worldwide. It is regulated within the United States to require a prescription. The medication should be used as directed under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Possible side effects may occur. This includes, but is not limited to: dryness, itching, redness, peeling, and irritation where applied topically. Periodic breaks are required with hydroquinone. Hydroquinone may produce ochronosis — a bluish black discoloration of the skin. Prolonged use of hydroquinone and continued sun exposure (not adhering to strict sun avoidance techniques) increase the risk of ochronosis. Periodic breaks are required as needed. This is not a complete list of side effects. Please contact your physician for medical advice regarding side effects.

No, active percentages of cosmetics do not compound or add together (see below). The total applied is 2% Hydroquinone. Stick to recommended usage so that you are not wasting your product.

Please consult with your physician if you have concerns about using other skincare products in your treatment plan and/or other medications. Do not use Hydroquinone when using Benzoyl Peroxide, Micronized Benzoyl Peroxide, Hydrogen Peroxide, or Peroxide products as temporary dark staining can occur when these products are combined topically.

If you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to get pregnant, report this information to your treating physician.

UV radiation, hormone fluctuations, age, inflammation, and other sources of injury such as healing from acne can cause hyperpigmentation.

Yes! It is safe for all skin tones.

Yes, it can. Please consult with our medical team on any questions regarding suggested use.

When used topically, OTC 2% Hydroquinone, as found in our Lighten Up Dark Spot Corrector, will reduce hyperpigmentation. This includes post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, such as scars or pigmented acne scars. There may be exceptions to this rule depending on the type of scar or how old it is. Consult with your physician or qualified healthcare provider to find the right treatment for you.

In order for hydroquinone to effectively reduce pigmentation concerns, you need to protect yourself from the sun.Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. To decrease this risk, regularly use a broad spectrum sunscreen with a broad spectrum value of 15 or higher.

Limit time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Use other protective measures including wearing long-sleeve shirts, pants, hats, and sunglasses.

Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, after swimming, excessive perspiration, towel drying, or long-term sun exposure.

Always adhere to strict sun avoidance or protect your skin with sunscreen. Active ingredients in LaserAway Beauty products and LaserAway clinic treatments may cause photo-sensitivity and require regular use of a sunscreen containing SPF 15 or higher, such as our BFF SPF 50+ Broad Spectrum Sunscreen. Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. To decrease this risk, sun protection measures are recommended. Other sun protective measures include, but are not limited to, limiting time in the sun, wearing long sleeved shirts, pants, hats, sunglasses, and consistent reapplication of sunscreen. For continued protection throughout the day, reapply every two hours especially if you are active, swimming, have excessive perspiration, towel dry, or wipe off SPF protection on skin.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends 1 ounce (1 shot glass or two tablespoons) of sunscreen for your entire body. The Skin Cancer Foundation, suggests approximately two milligrams of sunscreen per centimeter of skin. For the face, approximately a quarter size dollop should be sufficient for the entire face, neck, and décolleté. If you have further questions about sun safety, consult with your physician or qualified healthcare provider.

Each person’s needs may vary, but you should not use Hydroquinone for long periods of time. If you do not see any improvement in 3 months, please check in with your physician on any questions regarding suggested use.

Do not flush the product down the toilet or pour down the drain unless you are told to do so by your healthcare provider. Check with your pharmacist if you have questions on the best way to throw away your medication. There may be take-back programs in your area.
